FIFA President Visits Guam, Promises Increased Support for Soccer Community
Guam Football Association President, Valentino San Gil, recently announced that FIFA will be providing more support to Guam’s soccer community in the coming months. This news comes after a visit by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who arrived in Guam for a day-long visit.
During his visit, Infantino toured Guam’s soccer facilities, had lunch with island leaders and GFA member representatives, and met with hundreds of soccer players of all ages at the GFA National Training Center in Dededo. He even took the time to play in a short exhibition game with volunteer teams, showcasing his love for the sport.
San Gil expressed his excitement for the support that Guam can expect from FIFA in the near future, stating, “We’re expecting a lot of good things in the coming months from FIFA. Hopefully we can collaborate with the government to get more facilities on island.”
Infantino was clearly impressed during his visit, stating, “I’m really, really happy to be here today and this is really a corner of paradise that you have here.” He commended Guam’s passion for football, stating that everyone who plays the sport is a world champion in their own right.
Acting Gov. Josh Tenorio also praised the visit by Infantino, calling it historic and noting the unifying power of soccer. Tenorio expressed his gratitude for the commitment from the FIFA foundation to assist GFA in recovering from damages suffered from Typhoon Mawar, and emphasized the government of Guam’s interest in expanding the number of fields throughout the island.
Overall, Infantino’s visit to Guam has brought not only excitement but also tangible support for the island’s soccer community. This collaboration between FIFA, GFA, and the government of Guam has the potential to further develop the sport on the island and provide more opportunities for soccer players of all ages. Guam is truly at the center of the football world, thanks to the partnership and support from FIFA.
