V-League Compromised by Youth Tournament Interruptions: Vietnamese Football Paradox

The Impact of U23 Asian Finals on V-League 2023/2024: Clubs affected by interruptions and player injuries

After round 15 of V-League 2023/2024, the national championship will take a break for about 1 month as U23 Vietnam gears up for the 2024 U23 Asian Finals in Qatar. Matches in the domestic arena have just resumed, with clubs that only played two matches being interrupted. The disappointing performance of the national team at the 2nd World Cup 2026 was attributed to internal issues, and the pause for the youth team’s preparation has left fans and players disheartened.

This season has seen multiple interruptions, with the tournament halted four times since the beginning. From a break for FiFA Days to the Lunar New Year pause and interruptions for national team competitions, the recent stoppage for the U23 Asian Finals is a rare occurrence globally.

Agreed upon by the Vietnam Football Federation, Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company, and club leaders, the break impacts players and coaches who struggle to maintain form and match rhythm. The lack of continuity affects performances and increases the risk of injuries as players transition from a break to a dense match schedule.

Efforts to modernize the V-League align with global standards, but the focus on youth tournaments at the expense of domestic competitions remains a concern. The recent backlash against Indonesia’s decision to pause their national championship for the U23 team serves as a cautionary tale for Vietnamese football.

It is time for a shift in mindset towards prioritizing the national championship and national team over youth tournaments. Coach Vu Tien Thanh of HAGL criticizes the current scheduling as detrimental to players’ well-being and performance. The focus should be on strategic scheduling and player welfare to enhance the competitiveness and quality of Vietnamese football.

In conclusion, the V-League’s scheduling practices need a reevaluation to ensure the well-being and success of players and teams. Youth tournaments should not overshadow domestic competitions, and a balanced approach to scheduling is essential for the growth and development of Vietnamese football.
