- Laporte Reflects on Saudi Pro League Move - September 9, 2024
Former Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte has admitted that life in the Saudi Pro League has not been what he expected. Laporte, who joined Al-Nassr in a €27.5 million deal during the summer of 2023, left behind a successful stint at Manchester City, where he won 12 major trophies under Pep Guardiola.
Speaking ahead of Spain’s UEFA Nations League match, Laporte expressed that he feels distant from his usual surroundings and family while playing in Saudi Arabia. The 30-year-old hinted at a potential return to Europe if the right opportunity arises, stating, “I could consider in future returning to Europe. If an offer comes in, it has to be looked at.”
Laporte’s move to Saudi Arabia followed the trend of several high-profile players joining the league, but like some of his peers, he seems to be struggling with the adjustment. He was linked with a potential move to Real Madrid during the last transfer window, but the defender confirmed that no formal approach was made.
Laporte’s strong performances with Spain, particularly during their Euro 2024 campaign, have reignited interest from European clubs. Whether or not he decides to cut his time short at Al-Nassr, it seems likely that the Spanish star will have several options to consider back in Europe.
