A-League clubs push for player stand-down during Olyroos’ campaign

A-League Men Clubs Lobby FA to Stand Nestory Irankunda Down for Olyroos Campaign

A-League Men clubs are pressing Football Australia to sideline Nestory Irankunda, an Adelaide teenager, during the Olyroos’ U23 Asian Cup campaign. Irankunda rejected a last-minute call-up for the Olympic qualifiers after initially being omitted from the squad.

U23 coach Tony Vidmar faced challenges with European clubs withholding players, leaving him with limited options like Irankunda. Despite attempting to persuade the winger, Irankunda decided against joining the U23 Asian Cup in Qatar, prompting the selection of Keegan Jelacic from Brisbane Roar as his replacement.

Clubs in the Australia Hyundai A League expressed discontent over Irankunda’s autonomy in deciding his availability for national team duties, while still being able to play domestically. They argue that players declining call-ups should be ineligible for A-League matches during international camps to maintain fairness.

Multiple clubs have contacted FA, urging Irankunda’s ineligibility for the duration of the Olyroos’ camp, starting with Adelaide’s upcoming match against Macarthur. As Adelaide fights for a finals berth, Irankunda’s potential last home game at Hindmarsh Stadium against Macarthur holds significance.

There have been discussions proposing Olyroos players return to the A-League for the final rounds, but the crux lies in whether Irankunda officially received a call-up, a contention disputed by Adelaide United and FA.

Irankunda’s agent affirmed the teenager’s decision to stay with Adelaide for the season, emphasizing his value to the team. Coach Carl Veart praised Irankunda’s versatility and intelligence on the field, urging him to continue excelling after contributing to Adelaide’s recent three-game winning streak.

As Adelaide prepares for a crucial match against Macarthur, Irankunda’s performance will be closely watched as he navigates the complexities of club duties and national team responsibilities in the Australia Hyundai A League.
