Brandon O’Neill Set to Return to Perth Glory as Jets Uncertainty Looms
Brandon O’Neill, the 29-year-old midfielder, is set to bid farewell to the Newcastle Jets and return to his hometown club, Perth Glory, after agreeing on terms for the upcoming season. O’Neill made 38 appearances for the Jets during his two-season stint in the Hunter region, but recent unrest has prompted his decision to move back to Western Australia.
The collapse of the potential takeover of the Jets by the FC32 football investment group has raised concerns about the future of the club, leaving players like O’Neill pondering their next move if the Jets cease operations after this season. This will mark O’Neill’s third spell with Perth Glory, following previous stints at Sydney FC, Pohang Steelers, Buriram United, and a brief return to Perth before joining the Jets.
Meanwhile, young talent Maximilian Mauragis has secured a two-year deal with the Central Coast Mariners after initially missing out on the Olyroos squad for the U-23 AFC Asian Cup in Qatar. Mauragis got the call-up to replace Louis D’Arrigo, who was withdrawn from the tournament by his Polish club Lechia Gdansk. With a flight to Doha booked, Mauragis might have played his final game for the Jets, as coach Robbie Stanton opted for Daniel Wilmering in recent matches.
Having progressed through the ranks, Mauragis enjoyed his second stint with the Jets this season, with a brief spell at Wellington Phoenix in between, making 22 appearances for the team. Another departure looming at the Jets is the highly-regarded Pradonovic, who arrived in July after a successful coaching spell with NPL side Sutherland Sharks. Pradonovic, who also managed his own youth academy in Sydney, has reportedly struggled with the inadequate pay at the Jets, prompting him to explore opportunities elsewhere.
As players like O’Neill, Mauragis, and Pradonovic look towards new horizons, the uncertain future of the Jets looms large, with the potential club takeover falling through. The focus now shifts to the next steps for both players and staff amidst the growing uncertainty in Newcastle’s football landscape.
