Olyroos’ Marco Tilio Await Update on Fitness Ahead of Olympic Qualifiers
The Olyroos are eagerly waiting for an update on Marco Tilio’s fitness status as the Melbourne City winger sustained a quad injury ahead of Australia’s Olympic qualifiers. Tilio, who scored in the Tokyo Games, was set to depart for the U23 Asian Cup in Qatar, which serves as a qualifier for the Paris Olympics.
Tilio missed Saturday night’s 2-1 derby loss to Melbourne Victory due to a “minor quad injury,” which he picked up after their game against Central Coast. The 22-year-old had recently returned from a hamstring tendon injury, adding to concerns about his fitness. City and Football Australia medical staff are assessing the extent of Tilio’s new setback.
In preparation for their opening game against Jordan on April 15, the Olyroos are also scheduled to face Indonesia and Qatar on April 18 and 22, respectively. A top-three finish is necessary for direct qualification to Paris, while the fourth-placed team will take on Guinea in a play-off.
City will be without right-back Callum Talbot during the tournament, as it falls outside of an international break. Interim coach Raffaele Napoli mentioned the absence of Scotty Galloway as well, prompting the team to make strategic adjustments for their upcoming matches.
With only three games left in the season, City currently trail behind sixth-placed Western Sydney by four points, putting their finals hopes in jeopardy. Despite the challenging situation, Napoli emphasized the importance of focusing on the next game against Perth and utilizing the opportunity to secure vital points.
Head coach Aurelio Vidmar, who missed three matches due to illness, is expected to make a return to the touchline soon. Napoli expressed optimism about Vidmar’s recovery progress and his potential impact on the team’s performance moving forward.
As the Olyroos and City navigate their respective challenges on the field, both squads are striving to overcome setbacks and maximize their potential in pursuit of their goals. The upcoming matches will be crucial in determining their success and ability to achieve desired outcomes in the competitions ahead.
