Star striker Hannah Keane stretchered off with horror leg injury as Western United falls to Western Sydney, A-League Women finals race wide open

Star striker Hannah Keane suffered a devastating leg injury as Western United fell 3-1 to Western Sydney, intensifying the A-League Women finals race. Newcastle’s 3-2 upset over Melbourne Victory kept their season alive, while Melbourne City briefly claimed top spot with a 3-0 win over Central Coast.

Despite the thrilling weekend of action, Keane’s injury overshadowed the matchups. United were already facing the potential loss of Chloe Logarzo when Keane went down in the 70th minute, resulting in a lengthy delay and her eventual removal from the field with a likely season-ending injury.

Keane initially put Western United ahead in the 17th minute, but Western Sydney responded with goals from Ella Buchanan, Sophie Harding, and Harding again to secure the upset victory.

Former Melbourne Victory player Melina Ayres haunted her ex-club by scoring two crucial goals for Newcastle in a comeback win against Victory. Despite Rachel Lowe and Tori Hansen’s goals, Victory faltered as Ayres equalized in the 80th minute and secured the win with another strike seven minutes later.

The match ended in chaos as tempers flared, resulting in a red card for Jets goalkeeper Izzy Nino, who will miss the upcoming do-or-die clash against Adelaide. Melbourne City, Sydney, Western United, and Central Coast have already secured their finals places, while Victory, Wanderers, and Jets are still in contention.

Meanwhile, Wellington, currently eighth with a game in hand, could also make a late push for the playoffs. At Casey Fields, City defeated Central Coast with goals from Hannah Wilkinson, Emina Ekic, and Taylor Otto. City’s victory temporarily pushed them to second place behind Sydney FC, who have a game in hand.

The A-League Women finals race remains wide open as teams gear up for the final week of the season.
