Macarthur FC climbs to third on A-League Men ladder with win over Brisbane Roar
Macarthur FC claimed a crucial 2-1 victory over Brisbane at Ballymore, moving them up to third place on the A-League Men ladder. The defeat dealt a significant blow to Brisbane’s finals aspirations as they now sit in eighth place, three points adrift from the top six with only five matches remaining.
The hosts took the lead in the 14th minute through Florin Berenguer after a deflected shot from Marco Rojas. However, Macarthur responded quickly, with Tomislav Uskok heading home the equalizer from a well-delivered corner by Clayton Lewis.
Poor defending haunted Brisbane as they failed to clear the ball, allowing Raphael to unleash a powerful shot to give Macarthur the lead before halftime. Despite dominating possession, the Roar squandered numerous opportunities, with Thomas Waddingham missing a golden chance and Rojas hitting the woodwork.
Rojas showcased his quality once again, being directly involved in six goals in his last seven starts in the A-League Men. Despite their late surge, the Roar’s efforts were thwarted by Macarthur’s resilient defense in the closing stages of the match.
Macarthur coach Mile Sterjovski praised his team’s ability to withstand pressure and fight back into the game. On the other hand, Roar coach Ruben Zadkovich lamented errors at critical moments but remained optimistic about their chances of making the finals as long as a mathematical opportunity remains.
Overall, it was a closely contested match with Macarthur emerging victorious, while Brisbane’s hopes of clinching a finals spot took a hit. The win propels Macarthur into prime position as they continue their pursuit of A-League Men success.
