Exciting Results from the 2024 Asian Women’s U20 Semi-finals: Japan and North Korea Secure Final Spots
The 2024 Asian Women’s U20 semi-finals took place yesterday, with Japan’s U20 team securing a dominant 5-1 victory over Australia. Hiromi Yoneda (3′), Uno Shiragaki (63′), Maya Hijikata (83′), Chinari Sasai (88′) and Naomi Thomas-Chinnama (own goal, 89′) all found the back of the net for Japan, while Peta Trimis scored Australia’s lone goal in the 13th minute.
In the other semi-final, North Korea’s U20 women defeated South Korea’s U20 women 3-0 with goals from Choe Il-Son (45′), Jong Kum (51′), and Hwang Yu-Yong (78′). This victory sets up a final rematch with defending champions Japan, recreating the 2019 final. The 3rd place match will see Korea facing Australia in a historic matchup.
Vietnam’s U20 women, coached by Akira Ijiri, were eliminated in the group stage with 3 losses. However, there is positive news for the team as Ngoc Minh Chuyen’s goal against China has been included in AFC’s list of best goals in the group stage.
AFC described Ngoc Minh Chuyen’s goal as memorable, highlighting her skill in evading defenders before rifling a shot into the top corner of China’s net. Despite ultimately finishing second in the poll behind He Jia-shiuan (Chinese Taipei), Chuyen’s goal garnered significant acclaim alongside Suzu Amano’s (Japan) strike.
Overall, the stage is set for an exciting final between Japan and North Korea in the Asian Women’s U20 tournament, while Vietnam’s young players have shown promise despite their early exit from the competition.
