Graham Arnold Explains Squad Choices for World Cup Qualifiers

Graham Arnold Explains Exclusion of Nisbet and Discusses Stamatelopoulos’ International Future

Subway Socceroos head coach Graham Arnold unveiled his 25-player squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup qualifiers against Lebanon, with a trio of Isuzu UTE A-League talents making the cut. Perth Glory’s Golden Boot contender Adam Taggart secured a long-awaited return to the national team after almost two years, while Melbourne Victory’s Bruno Fornaroli and Western Sydney Wanderers’ Brandon Borrello also earned spots.

Despite his stellar performances for Central Coast Mariners, midfielder Josh Nisbet missed out on a call-up, with Arnold opting for more experienced players familiar with the squad dynamics and tactical requirements. The coach acknowledged Nisbet’s impressive form but stressed the importance of cohesion and understanding among the selected players for the crucial qualifiers.

Arnold hinted at a potential opportunity for younger and less experienced players like Nisbet if the Socceroos secure progression to the next round of qualifiers, especially with an eye on the away fixture against Bangladesh. The coach emphasized the need for a squad ready for the specific challenges of that match, considering the timing and logistics involved.

Another notable absentee from the squad was Newcastle Jets’ striking sensation Apostolos Stamatelopoulos, despite his strong goal-scoring record this season. Arnold praised Stamatelopoulos’s potential and performance but indicated that he might be considered for future national team campaigns, recognizing his talent and development as a player to watch.

In contrast, Taggart’s resurgence in the A-League earned him a spot in the squad, showcasing his goal-scoring prowess with 14 goals this season. Arnold highlighted Taggart’s improved physical condition and leadership qualities, noting his positive impact on the field as a valuable asset for the team.

The Subway Socceroos will rely on a mix of seasoned veterans and emerging talents to navigate the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, aiming to secure vital points against Lebanon to boost their campaign. With the inclusion of A-League stars like Taggart, Fornaroli, and Borrello, Arnold’s squad reflects a balance of experience and skill to tackle the challenges ahead on the road to Qatar 2026.
