Melbourne Victory Veteran Emma Checker to Retire at the End of Liberty A-League Season
Melbourne Victory’s experienced player Emma Checker has announced her retirement at the conclusion of the 2023-24 Liberty A-League season. The 28-year-old defender, with eight appearances for the Matildas, has achieved two Championships and two Premierships throughout her time in the A-Leagues.
In her final season, Checker joined Victory after spending four years at Melbourne City, displaying top form with two goals in 15 matches. Despite feeling physically and mentally fit, Checker decided to prioritize a new journey in life over football, expressing gratitude to her family, partner, and coaches for their unwavering support.
Having competed in 148 Liberty A-League games for Adelaide United, Canberra United, Melbourne City, and Melbourne Victory, Checker made her career debut with Adelaide in 2011 before moving to Victory two years later. Her contributions in the league included a 2014 Championship win with Victory and another title with City in 2019.
Victory’s director of football, John Didulica, praised Checker for her positive impact on Australian football and women’s sport. As Checker prepares for her farewell in the upcoming Melbourne Derby on March 17 at the Home of the Matildas, Didulica emphasized the importance of celebrating her legacy and providing her with a deserving send-off.
Acknowledging Checker’s significant role in advancing women’s football, Victory aims to honor her with a memorable farewell match and potentially secure silverware at the season’s end. Supporters are encouraged to show their appreciation for Checker’s contributions and support her transition to the next chapter of her life with enthusiasm and positivity.
