Sydney FC’s Cortnee Vine seals victory with second-half brace

Sydney FC’s Cortnee Vine leads team to victory over Western United in Liberty A-League showdown

Cortnee Vine’s two goals led Sydney FC to a 3-1 victory over Western United in a thrilling Liberty A-League clash at Leichhardt Oval. The Matildas star’s brace, along with Abbey Lemon’s opener, ended Western’s six-game winning streak and narrowed their lead at the top of the table to just two points.

Lemon opened the scoring in the 15th minute with her first Liberty A-League goal, capitalizing on a spilled save to give Sydney the lead. Vine then rattled the woodwork with a fierce strike before finally finding the back of the net in the 70th minute to double the Sky Blues’ advantage.

Western fought back as substitute Catherine Zimmerman headed home Grace Maher’s delivery to make it 2-1, but Vine’s second goal in stoppage time secured the win for Sydney. Alana Cerne had a chance to level the score for Western, but her header went wide, allowing Vine to seal the victory with a classy lob over the keeper.

The result shook up the Premiership race and handed Sydney a crucial win in the Grand Final rematch. Despite Western’s efforts to stage a comeback, it was Vine’s heroics that ultimately stole the show and earned the Sky Blues all three points. With the title race now wide open, both teams will be looking to maintain their form in the coming fixtures.
