Mariners soar to second with 2-0 win over Brisbane in Liberty A-League

Central Coast Mariners defeat Brisbane Roar 2-0 to climb to second spot on ladder

Central Coast Mariners secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Brisbane Roar at Ballymore Stadium, with goals from Wurigumula and Kyah Simon propelling them to second place on the Liberty A-League ladder. Both teams had opportunities in the first half, but it was Wurigumula who broke the deadlock with a well-placed shot just before halftime, giving the Mariners a 1-0 lead.

The away side wasted no time extending their advantage in the second half, as Kyah Simon found the back of the net just a minute after the break, putting them in a commanding position. This win temporarily places Emily Husband’s team in second place, trailing behind Western United and threatening their title hopes.

Brisbane Roar, on the other hand, now find their finals aspirations hanging by a thread, with the possibility of being seven points adrift from the top six after this defeat. Despite some promising chances, including a near miss from Mia Corbin, the Roar failed to capitalize on their opportunities, allowing the Mariners to dominate the game.

Ayesha Norie’s powerful strike was expertly saved by Mariners goalkeeper Casey Dumont, showcasing the defensive prowess of the away side. While Sharn Freier provided some attacking threat for Brisbane, her missed opportunity, along with defensive errors, ultimately cost them the match.

Annabel Martin played a crucial role in both of the Mariners’ goals, delivering a pinpoint cross for Wurigumula’s first goal and assisting Kyah Simon for the second. With solid defending and efficient game management in the second half, Central Coast Mariners secured their first-ever victory over Brisbane Roar, establishing themselves as serious contenders for the A-League title.
