Isuzu UTE A-League Squad Announced for WAFF Under-23 Championship

The Isuzu UTE A-League will take center stage at the upcoming West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) Under-23 Championship as the Olyroos have unveiled their squad for the tournament, set to take place in Saudi Arabia from March 18-26. The 26-man squad features 16 players from the Isuzu UTE A-League, representing various clubs including Brisbane Roar, Central Coast Mariners, Western Sydney Wanderers, Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory, and more.

The Championship will see Australia pitted against Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates, with the teams divided into four groups. Australia will face Iraq in Group D before potentially taking on either Egypt or the UAE, with the schedule opening up for their final fixture.

Head coach Tony Vidmar emphasized the importance of this tournament in the team’s preparation for the upcoming AFC U23 Asian Cup in April, highlighting the opportunity to acclimatize to similar conditions they will encounter in Qatar. Vidmar also acknowledged the challenges posed by the timing of the Asian Cup falling outside of a designated FIFA window, restricting player availability.

Vidmar expressed disappointment at not having access to all eligible players for the Asian Cup but highlighted the depth within the squad and the chance for new faces to showcase their abilities during this tournament. The goal remains clear for the team as they navigate through this crucial period leading up to the Asian Cup.

The Olyroos’ match schedule includes fixtures against Iraq U-23, an upcoming match against undisclosed opponents, and the final fixture in the Championship, providing ample opportunities for the squad to fine-tune their preparations. The squad comprises a mix of talented players from various clubs, each eager to make an impact on the international stage and prove their worth in the lead-up to the Asian Cup.

With the stage set for a challenging yet rewarding journey at the West Asian Football Federation Under-23 Championship, the Olyroos are ready to showcase their talents and continue their development as they aim for success in Saudi Arabia.
