Brisbane Roar CEO Supports Fans After Altercation with Police at A-League Match

Brisbane Roar’s CEO Kaz Patafta expressed support for the club’s fans after a video surfaced showing a supporter being restrained by police outside Suncorp Stadium during a match against Melbourne Victory. The fan can be heard shouting “I can’t breathe,” while additional footage showed police interacting aggressively with other supporters after the game.

Queensland Police stated that a 17-year-old boy and a 27-year-old man were given move-on directions for alleged anti-social behavior, and a 16-year-old boy was arrested for lighting a flare during the Roar-Victory game. Patafta assured fans of decisive actions in response to their concerns, emphasizing the club’s commitment to fan safety and enjoyment.

The weekend saw several clashes between fans and security personnel at games. The RBB (Red and Black Bloc), an active supporter group of Western Sydney Wanderers, staged a walkout during a derby loss to Sydney FC, resulting in 14 arrests. Fans reported police surrounding them outside the stadium, with one fan alleging injuries from police actions.

Macarthur fans also faced issues with security guards during a home win over Melbourne City, as they were forced to remove a banner. APL commissioner Nick Garcia remained unreachable for comment, with the league confirming an investigation into the incidents at both CommBank Stadium and Suncorp Stadium.

The APL reiterated its commitment to creating a safe and enjoyable environment for all stakeholders and fans, inside and outside the venues. They acknowledged the incidents and pledged to conduct a full review in collaboration with clubs, venues, and law enforcement, taking into account feedback from fans.
