“Emily Husband: Paving the Way for Female Coaches in Australian Football”
Emily Husband, head coach of Central Coast Mariners, reflects on her journey in Australian football and the challenges faced by female coaches in the professional game. Husband initially hesitated when offered the role at Sydney University but was encouraged by Director of Football John Curran, who saw potential in her. This leap of faith kickstarted her coaching career, leading her to her current position with the Mariners.
With a diverse background in football, including playing for Leeds United and Huddersfield Town, Husband found her passion in coaching. She transitioned to coaching roles in the United States, at Leeds, Chelsea, and eventually Sydney University before taking on the Mariners’ coaching job. Reflecting on her success, she highlights the lack of female role models in coaching during her playing days and emphasizes the importance of female representation in senior coaching positions.
Husband’s leadership at Central Coast Mariners has been instrumental in the team’s success in the Liberty A-League, exceeding expectations in their comeback season. Despite initial doubts and daunting responsibilities in building the squad from scratch, Husband has embraced the challenge with enthusiasm. She acknowledges the support of the Mariners’ fans and the club’s community-focused values, which have motivated her to excel as a coach.
As one of the few women leading Liberty A-League clubs, Husband aims to inspire other aspiring female coaches to pursue their dreams. She stresses the need for more opportunities for female coaches at all levels of the game, starting from grassroots football. Her determination to create a positive impact and her commitment to giving her all to coaching are evident in her approach to the game.
Heading into Round 19, Central Coast Mariners prepare to face Adelaide United, with Husband’s leadership guiding the team as they strive for success in the Liberty A-League. The journey of Emily Husband serves as a beacon of hope for women in football, encouraging them to break barriers and make their mark in the coaching world.
