Dedicated Coach Miura: Fostering Vietnamese Talent with Xuan Truong

Impressions of Toshiya Miura by former HAGL player – A Different Perspective

Former Vietnamese national team captain Toshiya Miura may not have had the most positive reputation among fans during his time as coach, but Luong Xuan Truong, a midfielder formerly with HAGL, has a different perspective. Truong shared on the XT6 podcast that he was impressed by Miura’s professionalism and attention to detail, despite criticisms that he did not favor players with the HAGL style of play. Working with Miura, Truong learned the importance of speed and precision in football, which had a significant impact on his career.

Miura’s emphasis on physical fitness and tactical awareness also left a lasting impression on the players under his guidance. Truong noted the intense training sessions that focused on improving players’ abilities to win second-ball situations and compete against stronger opponents. Despite the short duration of the workouts, the high intensity helped players adapt to the demands of top-level football matches.

The Japanese coach’s tenure with the Vietnam Football Federation saw some notable achievements, including victories over Iran and Kyrgyzstan at the 17th Asian Games in 2014. However, his time also included disappointments, such as the team’s inability to progress past the semi-finals of the AFF Cup against Malaysia and a bronze medal finish at the 2015 SEA Games. Miura ultimately bid farewell to the Vietnamese teams after the 2018 World Cup qualifiers in Asia in January 2016.

Although Miura’s coaching methods may have been criticized at the time, Truong’s reflections shed light on the positive impact the Japanese coach had on his development as a player. The lessons learned under Miura’s guidance continue to shape Truong’s approach to the game, highlighting the enduring influence of a coach whose dedication and passion for football left a lasting impression on those he worked with.
