Central Coast Mariners CEO Shaun Mielekamp Steps Down After Nine Years
Central Coast Mariners have officially announced that Chief Executive Officer Shaun Mielekamp will be stepping down after nearly nine years at the helm of the club. Mielekamp had taken on the role back in May 2015, following his time at Western Sydney Wanderers. During his tenure, the Mariners experienced both the lowest of lows and the ultimate high of securing the 2023-24 Isuzu UTE A-League Championship.
Despite the Mariners finishing at the bottom in four out of five seasons under Mielekamp’s leadership, the team saw a remarkable turnaround last season, with a Grand Final victory marking their resurgence in the A-League Men competition. After previous seasons characterized by struggles, the club’s recent successes brought Central Coast back to the forefront of Australian football.
Following their Championship triumph, Central Coast Mariners returned to Asian competition and are currently making strides in the AFC Cup. Additionally, the club’s men’s side is making a strong impression in the Liberty A-League, positioning themselves as serious contenders for the upcoming finals. Moreover, the Mariners have made a comeback in the women’s league after more than a decade, with expectations high for their performance this season.
According to Mielekamp, his decision to step down comes from a place of pride and accomplishment, stating that he has achieved all he can for the club. He expressed gratitude for the support from the Mariners’ community and highlighted the significant milestones the club has attained during his tenure.
As Mielekamp bids farewell, the Mariners board has announced that Director and Chairman Richard Peil will serve as the acting CEO while the search for a new leader commences. Peil commended Mielekamp for his dedication, emphasizing that without his contributions, Central Coast Mariners may not have survived the challenges they faced over the years. Peil also praised Mielekamp for his professionalism and positive impact on the club.
Having made a lasting impact on the Central Coast Mariners and the broader football community, Shaun Mielekamp’s departure signifies the end of an era for the club. As they navigate this transition period, the Mariners look towards a future filled with new opportunities and achievements, building on the foundation laid by Mielekamp’s leadership.
