Gwangju FC Secures Opening Victory Thanks to Lee Hee-gyun’s Goal

Gwangju FC had a strong start to the K-League 2024 season with a 2-0 victory over FC Seoul at Gwangju Soccer Stadium. Lee Hee-gyun and Gabriel scored the goals for Gwangju in the first half, setting the tone for the match.

Gwangju coach Lee Jeong-hyo fielded an unconventional lineup, leaving out foreign players like Asani, Victol, and Beka. He emphasized the team’s focus on performance rather than individual names, with rookie Ahn Hyuk-joo making a notable starting appearance.

Seoul, on the other hand, had star player Jesse Lingard on the bench for most of the game. Despite making his K-League debut in the second half, Lingard couldn’t turn the game around for Seoul as they struggled to break through Gwangju’s defense.

Lee Hee-gyun’s opening goal in the 20th minute put Gwangju in the lead, followed by a solid defensive performance to maintain their advantage. Seoul had their chances, but Gwangju’s goalkeeper Kim Gyeong-min stood firm, making crucial saves to secure the clean sheet.

In the second half, both teams made substitutions to try and change the course of the game. Lingard’s entry brought excitement to the match, but his efforts were not enough to overcome Gwangju’s lead.

Ultimately, Gabriel’s late goal from a corner kick sealed the victory for Gwangju, ending the game with a 2-0 scoreline. Gwangju’s strong start to the season showcased their determination and team spirit, setting a positive tone for the matches to come.
