Updates and Changes for FC Seoul in the Upcoming 2024 K League 1 Season
FC Seoul, determined to break their trophy drought in the upcoming 2024 K League 1 season, have made some significant changes, most notably adding Jesse Lingard to their squad. The team’s lackluster performance in the 2023 season saw them finish in seventh place, prompting the need for a revival reminiscent of their successful years in the 2010s when they clinched the league title three times.
One pivotal move has been the hiring of manager Kim Gi-dong from Pohang Steelers. Kim’s successful stint with the Steelers last season, winning the Korean FA Cup and finishing as league runners-up, bodes well for his potential impact on FC Seoul’s fortunes. Lingard’s arrival, signed to a two-year deal with a one-year option, is seen as a promising addition to bolster the team following winger Na Sang-ho’s departure.
Despite their seventh-place finish, FC Seoul’s attack, led by Na, was formidable, sharing the league’s highest goal tally with Ulsan Hyundai at 63 goals in 38 league matches. Lingard’s presence is expected to draw additional fans to the matches, evident from the enthusiastic reception he received upon his arrival in Korea.
The team has also secured veteran midfielder Ki Sung-yueng for another season, underscoring the importance of experienced players in guiding the team. The defensive line has been reinforced with the acquisitions of Rebin Sulaka and Choi Jun, addressing a critical area that needs improvement given the team’s defensive frailties in the previous season.
Sulaka, a regular in the Iraqi national team, brings a physical presence and international experience that could shore up FC Seoul’s defense. Choi’s impressive performances for Busan IPark last season earned him recognition in the K League 2 best XI, indicating his potential to contribute positively to the team’s defensive stability.
As the winter transfer window remains open until March 8, there could be further signings to strengthen the squad. FC Seoul’s first league fixture against Gwangju FC on March 2 marks the beginning of a challenging yet promising season ahead, with the regular season slated to run until October 6 before transitioning into the final phase where teams will vie for the league title or battle to avoid relegation.
