Saudi Pro League’s Transfer Window: Big Names, Smaller Budget, and Changing Targets

The Saudi Pro League has once again made waves in the world of football transfers, leading the Gulf region for the second consecutive year with a total expenditure of $431 million. Despite this impressive figure, the league’s spending has dropped by a significant 50.74% compared to last season’s $875 million, according to a FIFA report.

Among the big names this summer, Moussa Diaby became the most expensive signing, joining Al-Ittihad from Aston Villa for €60 million. The move signals Al-Ittihad’s intention to reclaim the title after a disappointing previous season, despite the presence of superstars like Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kanté. Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr also made headlines with their last-minute acquisition of French defender Mohamed Simakan from Leipzig for €45 million.

Other top transfers include Ivan Toney’s €42 million switch to Al-Ahli and Al Hilal’s €40 million signing of Brazilian forward Marcos Leonardo.

While Saudi Arabia continues to dominate the transfer market, other Gulf leagues, such as Qatar’s and the UAE’s, have spent far less. However, the Saudi Pro League’s strategic shift and continued investment in world-class talent keep it at the forefront of football’s evolving landscape.
