Mancini Criticizes Lack of Playing Time for Saudi Players Due to Foreign Stars

Saudi Arabia’s national football team manager, Roberto Mancini, has voiced concerns over the lack of playing time for local players in the Saudi Pro League, a trend exacerbated by the influx of high-profile foreign stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, and Karim Benzema. While the arrival of these global icons has boosted the league’s visibility, Mancini fears it is coming at the expense of the development and match readiness of Saudi players.

Mancini revealed that as many as 20 of his national team players are frequently benched in favor of foreign imports, with clubs prioritizing their quota of 10 foreign players. “Saudi Arabia’s national team players must participate as core players with their clubs,” Mancini emphasized, adding that his squad is missing out on critical match experience as a result.

These comments were made ahead of Saudi Arabia’s crucial World Cup qualifier against China, following a disappointing 1-1 draw with Indonesia in their third-round opener. Mancini, who took over the national team after leaving his post as Italy’s head coach, stressed the need for greater cooperation between clubs and the national team to ensure the local talent gets the playing time necessary for the country’s success on the international stage.

The Saudi Pro League’s preference for foreign talent has raised concerns about the long-term development of local players, particularly as Saudi Arabia vies for a spot in the expanded 48-team 2026 FIFA World Cup. The top two teams from each of the three groups in the third round of qualification will secure their place, while third and fourth-place teams will enter a playoff for the final two spots.

Mancini’s remarks highlight the delicate balance the Saudi league must maintain between attracting global stars and nurturing its homegrown talent.
