Analyzing Performance of Guam Teams in 2024 Marianas Friendlies for Football Development

Guam’s football development will benefit from a technical study following the conclusion of the 2024 Marianas Friendlies in Saipan. Coaches from the Guam National Program are determined to enhance the level of football in the territory by analyzing the performances of both the men’s and women’s teams in the friendly matches.

Ross Awa, Guam Football Association Technical Director, emphasized the importance of identifying areas for improvement and making necessary adjustments based on the data gathered from the matches. This analysis will shape training strategies and tactics for future international tournaments later this year.

In the men’s competition, Guam faced the Northern Mariana Islands twice, with a 2-2 draw in the opening match and a 2-1 victory for NMI in the final game. Notable scorers for Guam included E.J. Manibusan, Samuel Stenson, and Curtis “Meto” Harmon.

On the women’s side, Guam secured a 3-0 win and a 2-2 draw against NMI. Goals were scored by Anjelica Perez, Giselle Dahilig, Anna Jones, Yae Kawauchi, and India Sheppard, showcasing a strong performance by the team.

Kristin Thompson, Guam Women’s Team Head Coach, commended the players for their composed and determined play. She highlighted the need for continuous improvement while celebrating the positive aspects of their matches.

Both the Guam men’s and women’s teams comprised players from the Bud Light G-League Women and the Budweiser G-League at younger age brackets, many of whom have previous experience representing Guam in various age divisions.

Looking ahead, Awa acknowledged areas for improvement in the teams’ performance and expressed a commitment to working with the technical team to strengthen their overall capabilities for future competitions, including the upcoming AFC U20 Asian Cup™ 2025 Qualifiers and AFC U17 Asian Cup™ 2025 Qualifiers.

The focus remains on maintaining momentum and addressing key areas for improvement through rigorous training sessions before the next set of international tournaments. The collaborative efforts of coaches and players alike are geared towards enhancing Guam’s competitiveness on the football stage.
