JFK Islanders Claim Victory in 2024 Challenge Cup Preseason Tournament against Southern Dolphins

The John F. Kennedy High School Islanders emerged victorious in the 2024 Challenge Cup Girls High School Preseason Tournament, overcoming the Southern High School Dolphins 1-0 in the championship match at the Guam Football Association National Training Center. Sophomore Jaelyn Han notched the crucial goal in the 12th minute, propelling her team to the title as they shut down the Dolphins defensively for the win.

Reflecting on their triumph, Han expressed delight in securing the preseason tournament victory and highlighted the team’s ability to adapt and improve following their earlier defeat to Southern. The Islanders bounced back from a penalty kick shootout loss to the Dolphins earlier in the day, rallying to defeat the Academy of Our Lady of Guam Cougars to secure a spot in the final.

The annual tournament, now in its 10th year, featured eight competing teams, with players from Simon Sanchez High School, Harvest Christian Academy, and Guam High School joining in due to their schools not fielding teams. Additionally, the Guam Football Association donated football equipment to the participating schools gearing up for the upcoming Interscholastic Girls High School Football League.

The upcoming season holds added significance as the interscholastic league transitions into a combined format, pitting schools from both the Guam Department of Education and private institutions against each other. Han expressed eagerness for the challenge ahead and emphasized the importance of mental preparation for the trials awaiting the team in the new season.

Looking ahead, the newly consolidated league is set to kick off on March 22, with matches scheduled at George Washington High School. Furthermore, the tournament served as part of Guam’s celebration of AFC Women’s Football Day, with additional events including the Tokyo Football Association Friendlies Tournament on March 24.

As the Islanders basked in their tournament victory, the Southern High School Dolphins accepted the runner-up trophy graciously, setting the stage for an exciting and competitive season ahead in the girls’ high school football scene on the island.
