St. John’s School Knights Win Back-to-Back Sugar and Spice Festival Championships

The St. John’s School Knights secured victory in the 15th Annual Sugar and Spice Middle School Girls Festival, clinching the title with a 1-0 triumph over the Astumbo Middle School Dragons. Ahela’aoku’upu’uwai “Ahe” Kaae of the Knights netted the decisive goal in the 17th minute, sealing their back-to-back championship win.

Knights captain Aeva Sablan expressed delight in the team’s success, attributing the victory to their unity, effort, and strategy. She highlighted the festival’s excitement, showcasing matchups against unfamiliar opponents and enduring multiple matches in one intense day of competition.

In the lead-up to the final, St. John’s emerged victorious in Group C to advance to the semifinals, where they overcame Bishop Baumgaurtner Memorial Catholic School Obispos with a resounding 4-0 win. Astumbo, coming out on top in Group B, secured their spot in the championship clash by edging out Cmdr. William C. McCool Elementary/Middle School Seahawks in a penalty shootout.

The tournament served as the inaugural event of Guam’s celebration of AFC Women’s Football Day, with subsequent competitions set to follow. The Challenge Cup Girls High School Preseason Tournament on Mar. 17 will see eight high schools vie for the championship, while the Tokyo Football Association Friendlies Tournament on Mar. 24 will feature a friendly competition between five teams from Guam and Tokyo Football Association’s U16 Girls Team.

All events are scheduled to take place at the Guam Football Association National Training Center, further cementing the venue’s status as a hub for developing and showcasing emerging talent in Guam’s vibrant football community. The Knights’ success underscores their dominance in the middle school girls’ football landscape, solidifying their place as a force to be reckoned with in future competitions.
