Suwon FC’s Lee Seung-woo impresses with goal against Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in K League

Suwon FC’s Lee Seung-woo showcased his prowess with a goal in a 1-1 draw against Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in a recent K League match. The midfielder impressed Korean national team interim manager Hwang Sun-hong, who was in attendance at the Suwon Sports Complex.

Lee found the back of the net in the 46th minute, demonstrating his dribbling skills and agile movements by outmaneuvering the Jeonbuk defense. This goal marked his second consecutive league goal after securing the winner against Incheon United on March 2.

His excellent form comes at a crucial juncture as the national team gears up for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Thailand later this month. Interim manager Hwang observed Lee’s performance firsthand ahead of finalizing the squad on Monday.

Despite his past success at Suwon, where he scored double-digit goals in the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Lee has faced national team exclusion, missing out on the 2022 World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup. Once hailed as the “Korean Messi” due to his youth career at Barcelona, Lee struggled to meet lofty expectations.

After unsuccessful European stints, Lee joined the K League to secure more playing time, leading to hopes for a national team recall. Whether he will earn another opportunity to represent Korea remains uncertain as the team prepares for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Thailand.

The national squad is set to face Thailand in two World Cup qualifiers on March 21 and March 26, with the first game scheduled at Seoul World Cup Stadium in western Seoul. The outcome of these matches could determine Lee’s chances of donning the Taeguk mark once again.
