Record Attendance at FC Seoul vs Incheon United K-League Match Thanks to Lingard Effect

On March 10th, FC Seoul faced Incheon United in a K-League 1 match at Seoul World Cup Stadium, drawing a record crowd of 51,670 spectators. This turnout, the highest since 2018 when the counting method changed, was attributed to the anticipated debut of EPL star Jesse Lingard with FC Seoul. Lingard’s arrival sparked massive ticket sales, surpassing 44,000 advance reservations and attracting over 50,000 fans to the stadium.

Despite Lingard’s presence, the match ended in a goalless draw after a lackluster performance from both teams. Seoul’s coach Kim Ki-dong deployed Lingard earlier than anticipated, receiving a roaring welcome from the home crowd. Lingard’s contributions on the field included an exquisite pass that led to a missed chance by Kang Sang-woo. Lingard continued to create opportunities, but ultimately, no goals were scored, resulting in both teams recording a draw.

Lingard’s impact extended beyond the field, with fan anticipation evident in the sale of over 1,000 Lingard jerseys on game day alone, generating substantial revenue for FC Seoul. Despite Lingard’s presence, Seoul’s performances on the field have not yielded desired results, with the team recording a draw and a loss this season.

Meanwhile, early attention in the league has shifted towards Gwangju FC, coached by Lee Jeong-hyo, who secured their second consecutive win by defeating Gangwon 4-2. Striker Gabriel from Gwangju emerged as the top scorer with three goals this season. Other notable results include Jeju defeating Daejeon 3-1, Ulsan securing a win against Gimcheon Sangmu, and Pohang registering their first win by defeating Daegu 3-1.

Lingard, who walked around the ground to greet fans post-game, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and conveyed his excitement to repay the love on the field. Lingard emphasized the need to adapt quickly to the fast and strong nature of the K-League, aiming to contribute to the team’s success. Gwangju’s early dominance in the league standings, coupled with Lingard’s impactful arrival in the K-League, sets the stage for an exciting season ahead in Korean football.
