Exciting Start to the 2024 K League 1 Season: Ulsan Defend Title with Win Over Pohang
The 2024 K League 1 season began with reigning champions Ulsan HD clinching a 1-0 victory over last season’s runners-up Pohang Steelers. Ataru Esaka found the net in the 51st minute, securing the first goal of the season and three points for Ulsan in the clash at Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium. Despite Ulsan’s past goal-scoring prowess, they struggled defensively last season, conceding 42 goals. The addition of new defenders Ko Seung-beom and Hwang Seok-ho has provided stability at the back, hinting at a stronger defensive performance this year.
Ulsan, having scored 63 goals last season, now aims to secure a third consecutive league title and remain contenders in the ongoing AFC Champions League. Meanwhile, Pohang Steelers, under new manager Park Tae-ha, have yet to register a win this season after exiting the Champions League round of 16 with one draw and one loss.
In other matches, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors settled for a 1-1 draw against Daejeon Hana Citizen. Gwangju FC defeated FC Seoul 2-0, with former Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard making his K League debut as a substitute. Gwangju currently leads the league table alongside Ulsan, Suwon FC, and Gimcheon Sangmu on goal difference.
Gangwon FC and Jeju United played to a 1-1 draw, seeking redemption after narrowly avoiding relegation last season. Suwon clinched a 1-0 victory over Incheon United, showing improved defense under new manager Kim Eun-jung. Newly-promoted Gimcheon secured a 1-0 win against Daegu FC, aiming to adapt to the top tier after winning promotion from K League 2.
Looking ahead, the K League matches continue with a packed schedule, including Ulsan versus Jeonbuk in the Champions League quarterfinals. The 2023-24 Champions League will run until May, while the 2024 K League season spans from March to December, promising an exciting period for football fans.
