“Incheon vs Suwon FC: The Battle for Success in K League 1”
Last season Incheon FC finished fifth in the K League 1, just narrowly missing out on fourth place and a chance at qualification for the Asian Champions League 2. Their strong season included notable victories over the K League champions Ulsan Hyundai (now Ulsan HD), a double win against Yokohama F. Marinos in the Champions League, and an impressive away triumph over FC Seoul.
In contrast, Suwon FC faced a tougher season, ending in eleventh place and heading to a relegation playoff against Busan I’Park from the K League 2. After losing the first leg, Suwon managed a comeback in extra time during the second leg to secure their spot in the top tier for another season. With a new manager, Kim Eunjung, leading the team this year, Suwon FC aims for improved results.
At the start of the new season, Incheon eyes qualification for continental football next year, but must secure a top 3 finish or win in the renamed Korea Cup. They have made acquisitions, including Lee Beomsoo from Bucheon FC to replace departing goalkeepers. Matej Jonjic, a familiar face, has returned to Incheon after eight years elsewhere to strengthen their defense.
Meanwhile, Suwon FC has had a turbulent year, finishing second to last with the most goals conceded. Significant player departures required the arrival of new talent such as Kwon Kyungwon and Kim Taehan to reinforce their backline. Manager Kim Eunjung seeks to revitalize the team’s performance without key players like Ricardo Lopes and Lars Veldwijk.
Fans of Incheon will keep a close watch on Stefan Mugosa, who returned from J.League 1 side Vissel Kobe and is expected to make a strong impact after overcoming fitness issues and injuries in the offseason.
In head-to-head statistics, Incheon and Suwon each hold four victories in their previous encounters, with seven draws between them. In their recent matches, Incheon has been dominant, with Suwon’s last victory dating back to July 2022. The upcoming clash is set for Saturday, March 2nd at 16:30 KST and will be available for streaming on K League TV.
