Masakåda to Compete in West Asia Tourney in Saudi Arabia – Guam Women’s National Team Accepts Invitation from WAFF

The Guam Women’s National Team, Masakåda, has accepted an invitation to participate in the West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) Women’s Championship Saudi 2024 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Head Coach Kristin Thompson expressed excitement at the opportunity, following the team’s strong showing in the EAFF Women’s Competition last November.

Joining host country Saudi Arabia, the tournament will also feature teams from Jordan, Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Lebanon, and Nepal, with the draw scheduled for February 5. The competition will kick off on February 19 with two groups of four teams each competing in round-robin matches, leading to the semifinal playoff rounds and ultimately the championship match on February 29.

Thompson looks forward to the challenge of facing different styles of play and the opportunity for her players to gain valuable high-level match experience. The WAFF Women’s Championship, first held in 2005, has seen Jordan emerge victorious in five out of eight editions, with Jordan currently ranked at No. 74 in the FIFA Women’s World Ranking.

With Guam ranked second-highest in the tournament at No. 93, behind only Jordan, the team is set to showcase their skills on the international stage. Saudi Arabia, having launched their women’s national team in 2021, is ranked at No. 175, while other participating teams like Nepal, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria also bring their unique strengths to the competition.

This tournament serves as a platform for the growth of women’s football in the West Asian region, with teams looking to challenge each other and elevate the standard of the game. As the tournament draws near, Thompson will finalize her squad selection, gearing up for an exciting competition that promises to highlight the talent and potential of women footballers across the region.
