Vietnam National Team: Last Minute Surprise in Hot Seat

VFF to Announce New Captain for Vietnam National Team: Who Will Lead the Golden Star Warriors?

The Vietnam Football Federation is searching for a new captain for the national team after the departure of coach Philippe Troussier. VFF Vice President Tran Anh Tu disclosed that the announcement of the Golden Star Warriors’ new leader will be made by the end of April or early May. Speculation abounds regarding who will follow in the footsteps of the “White Witch,” with a surprise seemingly on the horizon.

Specific criteria have been established by VFF and the National Coach Council to select the new captain. The criteria encompass a broad range of qualifications, including expertise, understanding of Vietnamese culture and football, acceptance of differences, and more. Many coaches have thrown their hats into the ring to take on the role, with contenders from Korea, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, and even within the V-League.

European coaches like Emanuele Rinaldi, Roberto Donadoni, Luisma Hernandez, and Christian Zermatten might face challenges meeting the criteria due to their lack of familiarity with Vietnamese and Southeast Asian football nuances. On the other hand, Korean coaches Kim Sang-sik and Kim Do-hoon have not yet established a presence in Vietnam or the SEA region. The emphasis on coaches with a deep understanding of local football could signal a shift towards domestic candidates like Lee Young-jin, Mr. Park’s trusted assistant.

In light of the Vietnamese national team’s recent struggles and the limited remaining opportunities for success, domestic coaches could offer short-term solutions. While experienced foreign coaches are being considered, the focus appears to be shifting towards candidates with a strong grasp of Vietnamese football. Lee Young-jin’s willingness to lead the team and his tenure as Mr. Park’s assistant make him a potential frontrunner for the position.

VFF’s consideration of experienced strategists from Korea or Japan, like Lee Young-jin, indicates a desire for long-term stability and success. The possible appointment of a domestic coach or a trusted assistant like Lee Young-jin could provide a much-needed boost to the national team’s performance and fan support. As fans eagerly await the final decision, the football landscape in Vietnam may be primed for an unexpected twist in the coming weeks.
