Budding Manager Matthias Jaissle Aiming for Success with Al Ahli
Jeddah: Al Ahli made waves last July with the appointment of German coach Matthias Jaissle to lead the team in the Saudi Arabia Division 1. With a background at Red Bull Salzburg, where he became the youngest head coach in the club’s history at just 33, Jaissle brought a promising reputation and a knack for developing young players.
Embracing the high-pressing, intense style characteristic of the Red Bull system, Jaissle aimed to implement his tactics at Al Ahli. As the team currently sits third in the Roshn Saudi League, trailing Al Nassr by nine points and leaders Al Hilal by 21, Jaissle acknowledged the need to maintain consistency and intensity throughout the matches, especially against the top-tier clubs.
However, the team’s struggle against the “big four” of the league – Al Hilal, Al Nassr, and Al Ittihad – reflected in their lower goal conversion rate in those encounters. Despite showcasing a strong offensive performance against other opposition, Al Ahli’s ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities remains a challenge.
With Riyad Mahrez leading the league in chances created, Al Ahli rank fifth in conversion rate at a modest 17.6%. Enhancing their efficiency in front of goal could potentially translate into more wins and points for the team. Improvement in possession and strategic decision-making during critical moments will be pivotal for Al Ahli to turn their draws and defeats into valuable victories.
Looking ahead, Al Ahli faces a tough schedule against Al Ittihad and Al Hilal in the coming matchweeks, offering a true test of their progress under Jaissle’s coaching. Before these significant fixtures, the team must first tackle an away game against Al Ettifaq in Dammam, led by former football star Steven Gerrard.
As Al Ahli aims to bounce back from their recent setback against Al Nassr, Jaissle’s emphasis on meticulous preparation and tactical adjustments during the international break will be crucial. The upcoming challenges against top rivals will showcase the team’s perseverance and development under Jaissle’s guidance in the competitive Saudi Arabia Division 1.
