Cortnee Vine Returns to CommBank Matildas Squad for Friendly Against Mexico

In-form Sydney FC player, Cortnee Vine, is back in the CommBank Matildas squad for the upcoming international friendly against Mexico. The squad includes four Liberty A-League players, with Vine, Jada Whyman, Michelle Heyman, and Tameka Yallop set to face off against Mexico on April 10 in San Antonio. Vine missed February’s Olympic Games qualifiers but returns after scoring four goals in two games for Sydney.

Head coach Tony Gustavsson emphasized the focus on preparation for the Olympics following Paris 2024 qualification. With the opponents revealed at the Olympic Draw, the team’s goal is to narrow down to the final 18 players for success in France. Heyman retains her place in the squad after scoring five goals in two games, leading the Golden Boot race with 14 goals. Yallop, with two goals in her last three matches, continues to impress as well.

Unfortunately, Chloe Logarzo will miss out due to a hip injury, but the team selection remains competitive due to the depth and strong form of the players. Gustavsson highlighted the squad selection criteria, which includes individual performances for the club and in previous camps, along with chemistry and connection. The upcoming match against Mexico will serve as preparation against a quality opponent, focusing on implementing the team’s evolving playing style for the competitive Olympic tournament.

The international friendly between Mexico and Australia is set for Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at Toyota Field in San Antonio, TX, with a kick-off time of 7:00 pm local time (10:00 am AEST). The match will be broadcast on Paramount+.
