Wu Lei and Zhang Linyan Win Top Honors at Best Chinese Football Awards 2023 Ceremony
Shanghai Port’s striker Wu Lei claimed his fourth Chinese Men’s Footballer of the Year title at the Best Chinese Football Awards ceremony held in Shanghai. Wu, who previously won the award in 2018, 2019, and 2022, emerged victorious over competitors Yu Hanchao and Wei Shihao by scoring 18 goals during the 2023 Chinese Super League season, aiding his team in securing the league title. Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Wu emphasized the importance of inspiring Chinese football enthusiasts during challenging times for the sport.
On the women’s side, 23-year-old forward Zhang Linyan was named Women’s Footballer of the Year for her contributions as a key player in the Chinese national team. Yu Genwei, the coach of Tianjin Jinmen Tigers, was honored as Chinese Football Coach of the Year after guiding his team to an eighth-place finish in the CSL.
The ceremony also featured special awards, with referees Ma Ning, Fu Ming, Zhou Fei, and Zhang Cheng acknowledged for their historic achievement as the first Chinese referee team to officiate an AFC Asian Cup final. Additionally, the Village Super League in Guizhou province received recognition for their dedication to promoting grassroots football.
