2024 J.League Season Preview: Yokohama F·Marinos Seek Crown

Yokohama F·Marinos: Can they reclaim the J.League throne in 2024?

Yokohama F·Marinos, the four-time J.League champions, are looking to reclaim the top spot in 2024 after finishing as runners-up last season. In 2023, they spent seven weeks at the top of the table and had the league’s best attack led by Anderson Lopes, who was the joint Top Scorer with 22 goals. Despite a late-season loss to Vissel Kobe, they made a deep run in the J.League YBC Levain Cup and advanced to the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League.

Manager Kevin Muscat departed at the end of last season, leaving Aussie Harry Kewell to take charge of a talented squad. However, the team suffered a key loss with center back Ryotaro Tsunoda moving to KV Kortrijk in Belgium. This departure has left a gap in the backline that Kewell will need to address.

To strengthen the squad, Marinos have brought in goalkeeper William Popp from FC Machida Zelvia. Popp, who has been on the rise in recent seasons, is expected to be a key addition to the team’s defense. With ambitions to compete for every trophy, Yokohama has set their sights on success both domestically and in Asia.

The team’s attacking prowess remains strong, with the Brazilian trio of Anderson Lopes, Élber, and Yan Matheus leading the line. The midfield is bolstered by the addition of South Korean international Nam Tae-hee, providing a creative spark in the attacking third.

With a talented squad and high expectations, new manager Harry Kewell faces pressure to deliver results from the start. The team’s goal is clear: to challenge for every trophy on offer. As they continue their AFC Champions League campaign and aim for domestic glory, Yokohama F·Marinos will be looking to make their mark in the upcoming season.
