SAMURAI BLUE Eliminated by IR Iran in AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 Quarterfinals
The SAMURAI BLUE (Japan National Team) faced off against IR Iran in the quarterfinals of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 on Saturday. Despite taking the lead in the first half, Japan ultimately succumbed to a 1-2 defeat after IR Iran scored two goals in the second half, including a decisive one in extra time.
Both teams, ranked 17th and 21st respectively by FIFA, made four changes each to their starting line-up. Japan managed to take the lead in the 28th minute when MORITA Hidemasa’s shot deflected off the Iranian goalkeeper following a pass from UEDA Ayase.
IR Iran began to dominate towards the end of the first half, with Saman GHODDOS coming close to equalizing. In the second half, Iran persisted with their attacking play, leading to Mohammad MOHEBI’s goal in the 55th minute.
Despite some chances for Japan, such as Ueda’s missed header and Kubo’s wayward shot, they struggled to clear the ball after conceding the goal. Attempts to change the game’s dynamics by coach MORIYASU Hajime through substitutions proved ineffective.
The game’s turning point came in extra time when a long ball into Japan’s penalty area caused confusion, allowing Hossein KANANI to set up Alireza JAHANBAKHSH for the winning penalty. Japan tried but failed to take the match into extra time before the final whistle.
Qatar, Korea Republic, and Jordan also secured victories in their respective matches. The semi-final matchups will see Jordan face Korea Republic while IR Iran takes on Qatar.
Players and coaches from the Japan National Team expressed disappointment at the defeat, with reflections on missed opportunities and areas for improvement. Iran’s coach praised the team’s performance and highlighted the significance of the victory in Asian football.
Despite the loss, the SAMURAI BLUE put up a valiant effort in the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023, displaying both strengths and areas requiring further development in future competitions.
