DPR Korea Women’s National Team: A Strong Contender for Tokyo 2024 Qualification
The DPR Korea Women’s National Team, a dominant force in women’s football, has a rich history of success in Asia. With three AFC Women’s Asian Cup titles under their belt and a reputation for physical strength and fierce competitiveness, they are a formidable opponent on the pitch.
Japan, on the other hand, has faced challenges against DPR Korea in the past. However, a pivotal match in 2004 marked a turning point for Japanese women’s football when they defeated DPR Korea 3-0 in the AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Athens 2004. This victory at the Japan National Stadium, witnessed by over 31,000 spectators, propelled Japan to their first Olympic appearance and solidified their place in history.
Despite setbacks that led to their withdrawal from international competitions, including the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, DPR Korea has made a strong comeback. Their recent performance at the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou saw them finish as runners-up, displaying their trademark aggressive style of play.
In the ongoing Asian qualifiers for the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament Paris 2024, DPR Korea has shown dominance by finishing at the top of Group B with two wins and a draw. With a record of 12 wins, 5 draws, and 7 losses against Japan, they are now aiming for their third Olympic Games appearance.
Looking back at their history in major tournaments, DPR Korea has made four appearances at the FIFA Women’s World Cup™, with their best result being a quarterfinal finish in 2007. At the Summer Olympic Games, they have competed twice, with their most recent participation in 2016.
As the DPR Korea Women’s National Team continues their quest for Olympic qualification and strives to maintain their standing as a football powerhouse in Asia, their legacy of excellence remains a driving force in the world of women’s football.
