Last-Minute Venue Change Possible for Qatar vs. Iran in AFC Asian Cup 2023 Semifinal

Doha News reports that there may be a potential last-minute venue change for the AFC Asian Cup 2023 semi-final clash between host and defending champion Qatar and Iran. The match, initially scheduled at Al Thumama Stadium with a capacity of 44,000 seats, may now be relocated to the larger Al Bayt Stadium, accommodating at least 68,000 fans.

The decision is believed to be a response to the growing support for the Qatari national team, which remains undefeated in the tournament. The Maroons not only showcase their prowess on the pitch but also enjoy a significant home advantage, resonating with the enthusiastic local audience.

As of now, neither the Qatar Football Association nor the AFC committee has officially commented on the potential venue change, leaving fans in anticipation.

QFL provides attendance figures for Qatar’s previous matches in the tournament, with notable turnouts such as 82,490 for the Lebanon game in Lusail Stadium, 63,753 for the Palestine match in Al Bayt Stadium, and 58,791 against Uzbekistan, also at Al Bayt Stadium. The close-call victory against Uzbekistan, secured through a dramatic 3-2 penalty shootout, propelled Qatar into the semi-finals.

Qatar faces a formidable challenge against Iran, with Team Melli boasting an impressive unbeaten streak of 18 games and being one step away from their first final since 1976. The absence of Sadegh Moharrami and doubts surrounding Majid Hosseini add to Iran’s challenges, although the return of superstar Mehdi Taremi from suspension boosts their offensive capabilities.

In a thrilling encounter against tournament favorites Japan, Iran managed to escape defeat by converting a crucial penalty in the dying moments of the match. The upcoming clash promises high stakes and intense competition, as both teams vie for a spot in the AFC Asian Cup 2023 final.
