Hong Kong’s New Coach Aims for Rankings Boost and Cultural Change

Newly appointed Hong Kong football coach, Ashley Westwood, has laid out his ambitions to improve the team’s global ranking and instill a stronger work ethic among players and staff. Westwood, who replaces Jorn Andersen, will observe from a “back-seat role” as Hong Kong competes against the Solomon Islands and Fiji in a tri-nations tournament.

Westwood, previously coach of Afghanistan, emphasized the need to raise Hong Kong’s current world ranking of 159, aiming to break into the top 150. He also warned players and coaching staff that anyone not fully committed would be removed. His goals include qualifying for the 2025 EAFF Championship and the 2027 AFC Asian Cup finals.

The coach has vowed to create a culture of trust, honesty, and effort within the team, and expects his players to match his commitment. Hong Kong has only one win in their last 11 matches, and Westwood is eager to change that record, starting with their upcoming fixtures.
