Stockport County Secures Promotion to League 1 for First Time in 14 Years

Stockport County sealed their promotion to League 1 with a 2-0 victory over Morecambe. A goal from Isaac Olaofe in the 8th minute and Fraser Horsfall’s strike just before halftime were enough to secure their return to the third tier after a 14-year absence.

With this win, Stockport County cannot be caught with three games remaining, guaranteeing them a spot among the three teams automatically promoted. They now have the chance to clinch the League 2 title and secure promotion as champions with a win in their upcoming match against Notts County.

This achievement marks another significant milestone in the club’s journey, having risen from regional football in National League North just a few years ago. The takeover by local businessman Mark Stott in 2020 has been pivotal in their resurgence, with the team returning to the Football League in 2022 and narrowly missing out on promotion last season.

Manager Dave Challinor has been instrumental in guiding Stockport County to this success, leading the team past the disappointment of their playoff final defeat last year. The victory sparked jubilant celebrations, with plans for street parties around the ground as fans revel in the team’s accomplishment.

The Edgeley Community Association expressed excitement over the promotion, recognizing it as a significant achievement for both the club and the town. As preparations are made for potential celebrations, the community looks forward to honoring Stockport County’s success.
