Mohammedan SC crowned champions despite 3-1 loss to Delhi FC in I-League 2023/24 Season
Mohammedan SC emerged victorious in the 2023/24 season of the I-League, India’s second-tier club football league, at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan on Saturday. Despite their achievement, the Black Panthers succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against Delhi FC. The City of Joy witnessed enthusiastic Black Panthers fans filling the stands as they witnessed their team play some captivating football and secure a National League title after a 33-year drought. Delhi FC took the lead in the 7th minute with Alisher Holmurodov heading in a corner from Pape Gassama.
Delhi FC doubled their lead in the 31st minute through Gwgwmsar Gayari’s composed finish after receiving a precise through ball. The home fans were left awestruck by Yan Law’s youthful squad effortlessly breaching Mohammedan’s defense. Despite a late 3-0 deficit inflicted by Delhi FC, Mohammedan SC managed to salvage some pride with a thunderous strike by Mirjaloi Kasimov in the dying moments of the match.
The final score stood at 3-1 in favor of Delhi FC, but the real celebration unfolded as the Black Panthers lifted their maiden national trophy. Mohammedan SC concluded their campaign with 52 points in 24 matches, while Delhi FC settled at sixth place with 35 points from the same number of games. The victory paves the way for Mohammedan SC’s integration into the Indian Super League, promising thrilling encounters against other historic Indian football clubs.
