United City FC Suffers 2-0 Defeat to Rivals Kaya FC-Iloilo in PFL Season Opener
United City FC made their much-anticipated return to the Philippines Football League with a tough 2-0 loss against reigning champions Kaya FC-Iloilo in a heated match at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila on Sunday. The showdown between these two powerhouse teams was heavily anticipated, especially after United City’s abrupt withdrawal from the league last February due to financial troubles, putting a halt to their longstanding rivalry.
With United City out of the picture, Kaya dominated both the 2023 Philippines Football League and the 2023 Copa Paulino Alcantara titles in their absence. However, the tides began to turn with the appointment of Esti Puji Lestari as the new president of United City, sparking a complete overhaul of the team. Seasoned Filipino players like Curt Dizon and Mark Hartmann, alongside experienced PFL veterans Ricardo Sendra and Serge Kaole, were brought in to revamp the squad. The addition of Canadian goalkeeper Matt Silva, Indonesia’s Nurhidayat Haji Haris, and former Finnish standout Ariel Ngueukam further strengthened the team’s roster. Leading the charge was head coach Marian Mihail, with Nicolae Dica and Liviu Ciobotariu as his trusted assistants.
The match on Sunday was a testament to United City’s rebuilding phase, as Kaya wasted no time asserting their dominance with an early goal from Erik Esso just four minutes into the game. Despite United City’s valiant efforts to contain the defending champions, Kaya sealed the deal with a second goal from Jesus Melliza nine minutes before the final whistle, securing a well-deserved victory.
The defeat leaves United City at the bottom of the table after the first matchweek, but they have a chance to redeem themselves when they face Philippines Army FC on April 14th. It’s a chance for Marian’s men to bounce back and prove their mettle against a more evenly matched opponent, setting the stage for an exciting road ahead in the Philippines Football League.
