Razman Roslan Takes a Wait-and-See Approach to VAR Implementation in Super League
Former national defender Razman Roslan has adopted a cautious stance towards the upcoming integration of the video assistant referee (VAR) system in the 2024/25 Super League season. The Malaysian Football League (MFL) had previously confirmed that VAR would be introduced in the league during the mentioned season.
The implementation of VAR is widely perceived as a move that will elevate the quality of league matches to a higher standard. Despite the potential benefits, Razman remains circumspect about the system’s impact. The former Selangor FC player believes that VAR could either enhance the overall quality of Super League matches or have adverse effects on the game.
Expressing his thoughts on the matter, Razman highlighted the significance of VAR in improving the accuracy of on-field decisions. However, he emphasized the need to observe the system’s performance first-hand before drawing conclusive judgments about its effectiveness.
During the recent Astro Football Expert Lineup Media Conference for the Malaysia League (M League) Season 2024/2025, Razman shared his reservations about the potential outcomes of VAR’s introduction. He suggested that the system could yield positive results, but also acknowledged the possibility of encountering challenges along the way.
The forthcoming installation of VAR comes at a substantial cost, with MFL Chief Executive Officer Datuk Stuart Ramalingam disclosing an estimated budget of nearly RM10 million for the 2024/25 Super League season. The initiation of VAR is scheduled to coincide with the Sumbangsih Cup 2024 fixture between Johor Darul Ta’zim FC (JDT FC) and Selangor FC on May 10, marking the system’s debut in Malaysian football.
As football enthusiasts and stakeholders alike await the implementation of VAR in the upcoming Super League season, Razman Roslan’s prudent approach serves as a reminder of the potential impact and implications of introducing new technologies to enhance the sport. With the league poised for an era of technological advancement, all eyes are on how VAR will shape the future of Malaysian football.
