Celebrating Sunil Chhetri’s 150th International Match with the Indian Football Team
The All India Football Federation is gearing up to celebrate the impressive milestone of Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri, who is set to play his 150th senior international match when India takes on Afghanistan on Tuesday. This significant occasion comes as India continues its pursuit for success in the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup 2027 Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 2, with a rematch against Afghanistan following a recent goalless draw.
Returning home to face Afghanistan at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati, Chhetri’s remarkable achievement has garnered praise from AIFF officials. President Mr. Kalyan Chaubey commended Chhetri’s incredible journey since 2005, highlighting his impact on Indian football and the inspiration he has provided to millions of fans. Acting Secretary General Mr. M Satyanarayan hailed Chhetri as a key figure for the Indian Men’s National Team, lauding his skills as a player, captain, and striker.
Chhetri’s international career began on a high note in 2005, as he netted a goal in his debut match against Pakistan. Over the years, he has amassed an impressive 149 appearances for the Blue Tigers, amassing a remarkable total of 93 goals. This record-breaking achievement places him as the fourth highest international goalscorer of all time and the third among active goalscorers, showcasing his undeniable impact on Indian football.
Notably, Chhetri holds a unique distinction in Indian football history, having scored in significant milestones such as his debut match, as well as his 25th, 50th, 75th, 100th, and 125th appearances for the national team. As he prepares to make his 150th international appearance against Afghanistan, Chhetri’s legacy in Indian football is firmly cemented, with his commitment and skillset continuing to shape the future of the sport in the country.
