Ulsan HD Striker Joo Min-kyu Receives First Call-Up to South Korean National Team
Ulsan Hyundai striker Joo Min-kyu has earned his first call-up to the South Korean national team spearheading the 23-man squad chosen by coach Hwang Sun-hong. Joo, aged 33 and 333 days, joins five other Ulsan players in the squad, whereas Jeonbuk only contributes two players. Gwangju FC’s midfielder Jung Ho-yeon also makes his debut appearance in the national team.
Some familiar faces return to the squad, including Kwon Kyung-won of Suwon FC, along with Paik Seung-ho, Kim Moon-hwan, and Cho Yu-min. Unfortunately, experienced players Kim Tae-hwan and Lee Soon-min have been left out of the selection this time.
The absence of first-choice goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu due to injury paves the way for Lee Chang-geun from Daejeon Hana Citizen to make his return to the team after last being called up in November 2020.
South Korea is gearing up to face Thailand in consecutive World Cup qualifiers on March 21st and 26th. The team previously triumphed in their first two qualifiers, clinching victories against Singapore and China.
Following the dismissal of Jurgen Klinsmann, ex-manager Hwang Sun-hong has been temporarily handed the reins. The squad boasts a blend of experienced and emerging talents across various clubs around the world, with familiar faces such as Son Heung-min from Tottenham Hotspur leading the pack.
The squad list comprises a mix of goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and forwards chosen from both domestic and international clubs. Notable inclusions range from Jo Hyeon-woo of Ulsan Hyundai in goal to forwards like Cho Gue-sung from FC Midtjylland. The midfield boasts a strong presence, including talent like Lee Jae-sung from FSV Mainz 05 and Hwang In-beom from Red Star.
With a diverse and promising squad, South Korea is poised to navigate through the upcoming World Cup qualifiers with high hopes and aspirations under the guidance of Coach Hwang Sun-hong.
