“Guam to Celebrate 2024 AFC Women’s Football Day with Three Exciting Events”
In celebration of the 2024 AFC Women’s Football Day, Guam Football Association is set to host a series of events highlighting women’s and girls’ involvement in the sport. The festivities kick off with the annual Sugar and Spice Middle School Girls Football Festival on March 10. Guam, as a FIFA member nation, boasts significant female participation in football, a trend that has been on the rise since the introduction of recreational leagues in 2013. The enthusiasm for women’s and girls’ football in Guam is evident year-round, with the month of March dedicated to officially recognizing their contributions to the sport.
The 15th Annual Sugar and Spice Middle School Girls Football Festival, supported by Japan Football Association, will feature 16 participating schools. The event will commence at 8 a.m., with a championship match scheduled for 3 p.m. The following Sunday will showcase the Challenge Cup, Girls High School League Pre-season Tournament, with eight high schools vying for the top spot. The championship match for this tournament is slated for 1:45 p.m. Concluding the celebrations on March 24, GFA will host Tokyo Football Association’s U16 Girls Team in a friendly tournament, where five teams from Guam’s leagues will compete for glory.
A significant moment in AFC’s history, the establishment of AFC Women’s Football Day nine years ago marked a pivotal step in recognizing women’s contributions to football in Asia. AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa expressed his gratitude towards the women who have played a crucial role in the progress of women’s football in the region. The continued growth and success of women’s football in Asia reflect an exciting time for the sport on the continent.
The community is encouraged to attend the upcoming events at GFA, with schedules and updates available on GFA’s social media platforms. Trophies and medals will be awarded to the winners of each tournament, highlighting the talent and dedication of women and girls in Guam’s football scene.
