Casas Makes Bold Choices in Final Iraqi National Team Roster for Asian Qualifiers

Spanish national team coach Jesus Casas has trimmed down his initial squad of 77 players to a final list of 24, who will represent Iraq in the upcoming double Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup and the 2027 Asian Cup. Casas is currently deliberating between players from the Iraq Stars League and Europe to select the most prepared individuals for the national team.

In goalkeeping, Casas is favoring Zakho goalkeeper Ali Kazem over Mohamed Hamid due to his age and performance. He plans to include Kazem alongside Jalal Hassan and Ahmed Basil. Casas is also looking to make bold choices in defense, considering players like Adam Talib, Roman Dolacci, and others to reinforce the team’s backline alongside established names.

The midfield seems to be secure for Casas, with the likes of Amir Al-Amari, Zidane Iqbal, and others providing stability. Additionally, Safaa Hadi from Iranian club Tractor Field has received a call-up. For the attacking line, Casas will rely on Ali Al-Hammadi and Muhannad Ali, with potential reinforcements like Pashang Abdel Allah and Ahmed Yassin.

The final roster for the Iraqi national team, dubbed the Mesopotamia Lions, is set to be announced within the next 48 hours. The team will then enter a training camp in Basra Governorate ahead of their match against the Philippines on March 21st in the third round of the double Asian qualifiers.

Casas’s strategic decisions in player selection highlight his aim to field a competitive and well-rounded team for the upcoming crucial matches. The coach’s meticulous approach and keen eye for talent are evident as he finalizes the squad, aiming to lead Iraq to success in the challenging Asian qualifiers.
