ISL Matchweek 17 Review: Owen Coyle’s Chennaiyin FC Struggles at the Bottom, Mohun Bagan Emerges Victorious
Owen Coyle’s tenure at Chennaiyin FC has been disappointing as the team struggles at the bottom of the ISL table. A 1-0 loss to East Bengal further compounded their woes, leaving them just above struggling Hyderabad FC. Speaking of Hyderabad, they failed to secure their first win of the season, falling 2-0 to Punjab FC.
In other key fixtures, Goa halted their slide by drawing with Mumbai, while Odisha’s comeback win against East Bengal put pressure on league leaders Mohun Bagan. The Mariners, under Habas, cruised to a 3-0 victory over Jamshedpur, closing in on Odisha at the top.
Chennaiyin suffered defeat at the hands of East Bengal, with Nandhakumar’s 65th-minute goal sealing the win for The Red and Golds. Despite creating chances, Coyle’s men struggle to convert, with their top scorers managing just three goals each.
Punjab FC continued their strong form with a 2-0 victory over Hyderabad, with goals from Talal and Majcen. Majcen’s header and Talal’s long-range strike secured the win for Vergetis’s side.
Mumbai and Goa shared the spoils in a tense encounter that ended 1-1, with Yasir’s equalizer cancelling out Vikram’s opener for Mumbai. With the title race heating up, both teams missed out on a crucial win.
Odisha staged a remarkable comeback against East Bengal, with Princeton Rebello’s strike securing a 2-1 victory. Vishnu’s early goal for East Bengal was negated by Mauricio’s penalty, before Rebello sealed the win for Odisha.
Lastly, Mohun Bagan ended Jamshedpur’s unbeaten run with a commanding 3-0 victory. Petratos, Cummings, and Sadiku found the net for Bagan, with Manvir instrumental in setting up two of the goals.
With the race for the title intensifying, Goa, Mohun Bagan, and Mumbai are all in contention, looking to challenge Odisha at the top of the table. Stay tuned to IFTWC for more Indian football news.
