Tan Cheng Hoe Denies Speculation of Move to Another Malaysian Super League Team; Joins Thai Club Police Tero
Former Selangor head coach Tan Cheng Hoe has refuted claims that his move to Thai club Police Tero is simply a temporary stopover before returning to a Malaysian Super League team. Despite Police Tero’s current 14th position in the Thai League 1 standings, Cheng Hoe emphasized that the opportunity could potentially lead to a contract extension.
Having guided Selangor to a second-place finish in the Super League last season, Cheng Hoe faced a difficult choice in leaving the Red Giants. Balancing Selangor’s upcoming participation in the Asian Champions League 2 and their strong position to challenge for the Super League title against Police Tero’s struggles, the decision was not taken lightly.
Acknowledging the support he received from Selangor’s management, players, and coaching staff, Cheng Hoe expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work abroad, a dream he has long harbored. With the blessing of Selangor’s RMS, he made the move to Police Tero, hoping it would pave the way for more Malaysian coaches to explore international opportunities.
Shortly after his arrival in Bangkok, Cheng Hoe prepared to lead Police Tero in their upcoming match against Nakhon Pathom, marking his debut in the Thai League. Recognizing the limited time left in the season, he stressed the need to focus on helping the team avoid relegation from the first division, given their current precarious position with only 19 points from 19 matches.
As he settles into his new role, Cheng Hoe emphasized the importance of a gradual approach, understanding that success cannot be achieved overnight. With determination and a commitment to the team’s objectives, he aims to make a positive impact during his tenure with Police Tero, despite the challenges that lie ahead.
With 11 games remaining in the season, Cheng Hoe faces a tough task to steer Police Tero clear of relegation and make a meaningful contribution to the club’s fortunes in the Thai League. Time will tell if his decision to depart Selangor for a new challenge abroad proves to be a rewarding chapter in his coaching career.
