Coach Philippe Troussier Encourages Nguyen Cong Phuong to Strive for J-League Success
Coach Philippe Troussier recently traveled to Japan to observe Nguyen Cong Phuong’s performance in Yokohama as part of the Vietnam team’s upcoming reunion preparations. Despite not appearing in the J-League’s opening matches, Troussier witnessed Phuong play for the reserve team the following day. Post-game, Troussier met with Phuong, offering support and advice to strive for more playing time in J-League 2 to further his development and contribute to the national team.
In a conversation with Targma newspaper, 1995-born Phuong disclosed details of his meeting with Troussier, who assessed his progress without divulging specifics. Acknowledging his lack of national team selection due to limited playing time, Phuong noted his comfort and proficiency in the defender role during the reserve match, expressing a desire to showcase his abilities further. Since joining Yokohama in December 2022, Phuong has had limited opportunities under Coach Shuhei Yomoda, with only one appearance in the Japanese Federation Cup against Nagoya. Despite this, his contract extension and the team’s relegation to J League 2 present a chance for increased game time.
Looking ahead, Phuong prioritizes making meaningful contributions to Yokohama FC to secure a spot in the Vietnamese national team. Emphasizing his commitment to Yokohama’s success, Phuong recognizes the significance of his current team in his pursuit of international recognition. This determination to excel at the club level not only aligns with his aspirations in the national team but also reflects his dedication to personal growth and performance improvement. With Troussier’s guidance and support, Phuong aims to seize every opportunity to showcase his skills and elevate his standing within both the club and country’s football community.
